Along with being a chiropractor Dr. Austin is a fitness enthusiast and co-owner of Psycho Gym which has two DFW locations. Psycho Gym was the winner of 2011's D Magazine Best Fitness program in Dallas. Dr. Austin Has noticed a trend with the population spending hours and hours on the treadmill or doing long cardio type exercise without the results or body they want. Along with research and thousands of case studies to back up his claims, Dr. Austin has developed exercise routines that can be done in as little as 30 minutes a week that literally turn your body in to a fat burning machine.
Dr. Austin first started researching exercise in more depth after his football career. "I was spending two hours at the gym, an hour lifting weights followed by an hour of cardio on either a treadmill or eliptical. And I was still never completely happy with my results. Especially for the time I put in." He then started comparing the body composition of sprinters to marathon runners, and noticed a huge difference in body fat and muscle mass. Followed by countless hours of research, in books and in the gym, Dr. Austin came to some trend breaking conclusions. Cardio would put more fat on you, and shorter, high intensity type workouts would regulate hormones and shed fat. Through his background with his Bachelor's of Science in Health and Wellness, he found that physiologically when you do cardio you raise stress hormones such as cortisol which forces your body to store more of your food in to fat. "It's actually basic physio, when you are on a treadmill for an hour, your body is under stress. When your body is under stress, it raises stress hormones. Which makes your body store more fat. Yea yea yea, if you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. But you will never create a body that burns fat for you, and has a great amount of lean muscle." Then he found that if you did short high intensity type exercise, it did the exact opposite. "When you do a high intensity exercise for 20 to 30 seconds, with the same amount of rest in between, it confuses and shocks your body. Forcing it to lower stress hormones and raise good hormones such as testosterone and growth hormone. These will help your body burn fat for 24 to 36 hours post exercise. -And your'e not losing muscle." So with this research and concept, Dr. Austin and his business partner Travis Williams, B.S. created the best fat burning exercises and implemented them in their gyms, Psycho Gym. No wonder they were voted Best Fitness Program in Dallas in 2011 by D magazine. Dr. Austin has also taken this concept and implemented rountines with his patients to maximize their fat burning potential. "The great thing is, it doesn't matter how busy you are. My routines can be done in your living room, in a hotel room, for as little as 10 minutes per session." Dr. Austin works with the busiest of schedules and ANY fitness level.
