Often when I speak at companies or to patients about the dangers of fluoride, the first thing that comes up is "what about my teeth?!" Take a deep breath. your teeth will be fine. Ever wonder why there was a warning on the back of your toothpaste that says "If swallowed contact a physician or seek medical advice immediately"? That's because fluoride is a neurotoxin. Don't swallow any toothpaste, but here drink it all day in your water. Bottom line is fluoride is harmful to your health. Now I am not going to go in to how it got in to your water to begin with. We all know that if we exercise we can lose weight right? But eating right and exercising can sometimes be easier said than done. This holiday season your time is going to be spread thin, whether it is traveling, putting in extra hours at the office, or trying to get stuff done before the end of the year. So maximizing your time is going to be crucial. You want to develop a workout routine that is short, to the point, but effective. That type of exercise is going to be called interval, burst, or surge type training. You will get the most out of the short time you put in. These workout routines can be done in as little as 10 minutes, but with the high intensity intervals followed by breaks to bring your heart rate down your hormones will begin to balance and burn fat for you. Yesterday I did a corporate wellness talk at a company that served pizza to their employees. Maybe they did it to just make me mad, haha. But at least I wasn't talking about nutrition. I started the talk out by making a joke about it. And a lady shouted out that it was OK because this pizza place only does whole wheat crust. I looked at her, and then she said three words that made me cringe, "So it's healthy". I couldn't help myself, I had to respond. I simply told her, "we need to work on your definition of healthy".
Sometimes when I do these talks, I think to myself who hasn't heard this information already? Or they have probably already read this online somewhere. But then there are other times where I am reminded how little most of us know about health. What it is, where it comes from, where to start when pursuing it.
Now whole wheat pizza, is it healthy? Maybe healthier than some others. But it's still loaded with carbohydrates, cheese, nitrate and nitrite filled sausage. Well balanced right? haha think again. There is a great book out right now called Grain Brain, I highly recommend it. Now do some grains have benefits, of course, ancient grains like quinoa or spelt and others that are complete proteins. But the wheat pizza? Basically brown colored dough. But the pizza is not my point, my point is we don't know what health is, I have made it my mission to try to show as many people as I can. This weekend was a big test of my patience. I spent all day Saturday putting up Christmas lights. (Dont worry Im not running them yet) I bought brand new lights that came on a reel. The longest reel I've ever seen, 250 ft on one strand. The directions on the reel said do not plug in while on reel. So I didn't, and I didn't unravel the 250 feet of lights, because it was very convenient to have them on the reel. So I didn't test them. And guess what? Half of them didn't work. I couldn't get them figured out by the time it was dark, so that meant I was going to have to spend some time on Sunday figuring it out too. But this put me in such a bad mood, googling what could be wrong, frustrated with them. I even went out in the dark and changed all the fuses. But what I noticed (after a while) is that i was letting these stupid lights ruin my Saturday night. They were getting to me so bad that I couldn't enjoy myself. Finally i had to tell my self Who cares? I'l figure it out tomorrow. I ended up putting some smaller strands over the sections that weren't lighting up the next day and they look fine.
The moral of the story, don't sweat the small stuff! I know we hear this phrase often, but too often we let the smallest things get to us.

I am currently rereading a book called "The Radical Leap" by Steve Farber, it's a great book that I highly recommend. He brings up a point about us always conning ourselves and the people around us. Making false promise or lofty goals with out any real intention on fulfilling them. They make us sleep better at night, be able to look at ourselves in the mirror, promising ourselves that change is right around the corner. And that is the real reason we are conning ourselves, because we are scared of change. We are creatures of habit. Change can be scary, Farber actually calls the point that you must reach as your OSM (Oh Shit Moment). That moment that you come to the conclusion that you have to change, and you make that decision in the face of the chance that you can fail.
Sometimes my blogs are health related, and sometimes they're spiritual or motivational. But guess what they all go hand in hand. So whatever you have in the back of your mind that you have been promising yourself or someone else for a while now, do it. The only time is NOW. There is no time for "I will get to it." If losing weight is your "sooner or later", what are you waiting for? A heart attack? Diabetes? I recently had a new patient tell me that they were going to wait until next year to make any health decisions. That's fine, we are all on our own journey, but WHY? What are you waiting for? There will never be a time when change is convenient. And the longer you wait on it the more comfortable you become with your present situation. It becomes your "normal". Then you look around and start comparing yourself to the people around you, and you get even more comfortable.
I recently did a wellness talk at a company where quite a few of them scheduled appointments to come in to my office for an evaluation. The first person came in, I made my recommendations for her to maximize her health potential, just the beginning step of her changing her life. She wasn't ready, but then guess what happened next? All of her coworkers cancelled their scheduled appointments. Not only did she limit herself, she was so scared of change that she wanted to make sure everyone around her wasn't going to make any drastic changes either. It made her more comfortable with where she was at. Now, I have had the exact opposite happen, where one person goes back to their company and leads people around them to live healthier lives.

On my way to the office today, I couldn't help but notice the light up marquee at CVS. It was rotating three different advertisements while I waited at the light. The first read "We sell beer and wine!", notice the exclamation point. The second read "Check out our cigarette 2 pack special". And the third, I think. was milk or eggs, or something like that. Does anyone else see a problem? Does anyone else think it's a little strange that a place where you are suppose to get medicine that makes you "healthy" also sells tobacco and alcohol? Or how about the loads of candy, chips, and sodas they also sell? If CVS and Walgreens were about health wouldn't they only sell healthy food and supplements? What do you think the pharmacist feels like everyday walking in to work? I mean they have a high education, they know that the stuff in their store isn't healthy right? I can't imagine walking through the aisles of candy, cigarettes, and beer to get behind the counter and try to talk to people about getting healthy. Imagine if at my front desk I sold candy bars instead of protein bars. Imagine if I had beer on tap instead of Kombucha. I could probably sell more beer than Kombucha. So just remember that next time you walk in to one these stores, that must be their philosophy. Whatever sells, gets put on the shelves. Or maybe their thinking is even more sinister.... That they are actually trying to make people more unhealthy so they will need more drugs. Just a thought. Corporations always have all of our best interests in mind right? Ha!
I love Italian food, and my wife is Italian. So we eat a lot of Pasta! But probably not the pasta that you are thinking of. Last night we had spaghetti, not with noodles. My wife has a spiral slicer that she uses with zucchini and squash to make them look like noodles. Once the sauce and meat is on, you won't miss the noodles. It tastes great, and you are getting vegetables in. She also does this with a spaghetti squash, bake it for 45 mins to an hour and you cut it in half and scrape out the "noodles". If you want bigger noodles for say fettuccine alfredo, you can adjust the spiral slicer for that. Or if you don't have a spiral slicer, you can take a potato peeler to the zucchini. You can use any sauce, my personal favorite is my wifes homemade pesto she makes with fresh basil from our herb garden. Try it, it's easy. The Biggest mistake you can make this holiday season is to get out of your normal healthy routine. Unless you don't already have one, then the biggest mistake is not starting one this holiday season, and the best time is now, not on Jan 1st. The best time is always now.
It is already November, not sure where 2013 went, and I am already seeing Christmas lights being put up! Way too early in my opinion, but the point is, here comes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. (In that order) The next two months most likely have a few sugar cookies and binge eating in your future. But the worse thing you can do is drag this out over two months. Why do New Year's weightloss resolutions fail? Because you just binged for two months and are probably now going through sugar or carbohydrate withdraws. Sugar is a drug. Now I am not saying not to participate in any holiday festivities. But control yourself. Practicing self control will keep you on track. For example, say you don't usually eat mashed potatoes and gravy, but it's Thanksgiving and I WANT it! Then eat it, it's only one day out of the year, but pass on dessert. Give and take. If you pass on the carbs for dessert instead, make sure you separate your meal and dessert by at least an hour. That way you don't spike your insulin levels and store more of that turkey to fat.
Do not stop your workout routine. It is easy to get out of the routine of working out during the holidays. Not only will you have a hard time burning off those extra calories but those stress levels that are high from maxing out your credit card or seeing your cousin that you cant stand to be in the same room with will creep up on you and cause more weight gain. I have a great 12 minute workout routine that can be done in your living room through the holidays.
Don't drag it out! If you are gonna binge, then make sure it is November 28th and December 25th ONLY! Cookie, pies, and cakes are gonna be out a lot more days than that. And you know there will be left overs, but don't drag it out, its over, done with, now lets get a workout in!
