What's in your fish oil?

Picture
   Yesterday at the office I had a rep from a large chain store drop off some free samples of a variety of health related items at my office. I had my front desk put them in my office so I could go through them before just leaving them for patients to take. MegaRed fish oil was one of them. No I already have a fish oil, that in my opinion is the best on the market, for sale in my office. But just out of curiosity I inspected the ingredients on the back. Here is the key when inspecting ingredients on supplements. Don't just look at the active ingredients, but glance down at the "other ingredients", that is usually where you find the garbage. So in MegaRed fish oil that is suppose to be "healthy" for you. It also has the artificial colors Red#40 and Blue#1. If you do not know about these food coloring's already they are extremely toxic.
   A little bit more on these two colors specifically;
  • Red #40 (Allura Red)
    This is the most-widely used and consumed dye. It may accelerate the appearance of immune system tumors in mice. It also causes hypersensitivity (allergy-like) reactions in some consumers and might trigger hyperactivity in children. What it's in: Beverages, bakery goods, dessert powders, candies, cereals, foods, drugs, and cosmetics.
  • Blue #1 (Brilliant Blue)
    An unpublished study suggested the possibility that Blue 1 caused kidney tumors in mice. What it's in: Baked goods, beverages, desert powders, candies, cereal, drugs, and other products.
  • Cancer and Other Serious Risks from Food Dyes RevealedIn CSPI's summary of studies on food dyes2, you can see that some of the most commonly used food dyes may be linked to numerous forms of cancer. CSPI reported:

  • "The three most widely used dyes, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, are contaminated with known carcinogens … Another dye, Red 3, has been acknowledged for years by the Food and Drug Administration to be a carcinogen, yet is still in the food supply."

    In their 58-page report, "Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks," CSPI revealed that nine of the food dyes currently approved for use in the United States are linked to health issues ranging from cancer and hyperactivity to allergy-like reactions -- and these results were from studies conducted by the chemical industry itself.

  • You have to be very careful when choosing your supplements and vitamins. They aren't even regulated by the FDA who do a bad job regulating anyway. In my office we only carry supplements that my family and I take personally and that I can speak for. I receive third party testing on them and they are only carried by healthcare professionals. The highest quality on the market. Choose you supplements wisely, they weren't all created equal.
