SATURATED FAT RAISES CHOLESTEROL

During one of my recent corporate wellness talks, I had someone in the audience disagree with me. He may not have been the first person ever to disagree wit me but he was the first to verbally express it! The workshop was on nutrition and I was explaining the benefits of eating good saturated fats and explaining how the low fat and fat free diets are horrible. He had his mind set that saturated fats were bad, which that is what all of us have been led to believe over the years. That saturated fats raise cholesterol levels which in turn leads to heart disease. He was saying that the human body wasnt designed to consume saturated fats. I very politely told him that 54% of human breast milk is made of saturated fat, and asked if he thought that babies shouldnt consume it?! Oops... Human breast milk is essential to proper development! And saturated fats are essential to your health! Let me go through some of the reasons why the low fat myth is a lie that has been going on far too long.

The myth that saturated fat raises cholesterol and causes heart disease is still alive today.

This ideas was based on some flawed observational studies conducted in the 60s and 70s.

Since then, many studies have re-examined this relationship and discovered that:
  1. There is literally no association between saturated fat consumption and cardiovascular disease.
  2. Saturated fat raises HDL (the good) cholesterol and changes the LDL from small, dense (bad) to Large LDL, which is benign.
There is no reason to avoid natural foods that are rich in saturated fats. Meat, coconut oil and butter are perfectly healthy foods.

Bottom Line: Despite decades of anti-fat propaganda, saturated fat has never been proven to cause heart disease. New studies prove that there is literally no association.
