Goals are NOT Enough.

Picture
This time of year there are a lot of goals being made. Goals of losing weight, quit smoking, travel more, spend more time with family, etc. But unfortunately goals are not enough.

One of my favorite shows is Shark Tank. Where hopeful business owners pitch their idea or product to a group of Millionaire and Billionaire investors hoping one bites. One of those investors is Dallas' own Mark Cuban. He uses a line often when he feels that one of the contestants is looking for a bailout or hasn’t put the time or effort in. He says "You’re not an entrepreneur, you're a wantrepreneur." Then he usually follows that with, "For that reason, I'm out." If you have ever seen the show you know exactly what I am talking about. But usually Mark, is right on when he uses this line.
There are many people that would love to walk out of the tank with a billionaire investor behind them and hopefully make millions down the road. But not all of them have put in the time or the sacrifice. Many people want to lose weight, get healthier. But a lot of those same people aren't willing to do what it takes to make that goal a reality.
I use to be a huge fan of setting goals, then I started recommending to be very specific with your goals. For example instead of a goal of losing weight, be specific, I want to lose 20lbs in the 3 months. I use to think that would put the wheels in motion, keep people accountable. But does that make a difference? Probably not. Goals are not enough, and honestly for the most part a complete waste of time.
In my field, that would appear sacrilegious. He doesn't recommend setting goals?! No I don't, I now recommend making plans. You see, making plans are a lot different than setting goals. Do you set a goal of seeing a friend more often? No, you make a plan of going to dinner with them. So instead of setting a goal of losing weight, make a plan of dragging yourself out of bed tomorrow morning and getting to the gym. Make a plan to bring your lunch to work every day instead of going through the drive-thru. Make plans, and stick to them. You can have a goal of building a house, but you will never get it done without plans on how to build it.
