![]() I rarely have my jaw dropped by someone's medical story or experience. This week was one of those moments. Not that it doesn't get to me anymore, some of the horrible experiences or the stuff people have endured. But quite frankly, I have heard it all, but this blew my mind. I actually thought this was outlawed at some point, I knew it was in our medical past and history but I didn't know this was still going on. What am I talking about? As you probably guessed from the title...Electroshock therapy. I met someone this week who told me about her husband's battle with depression. I meet a lot of people who suffer with depression, I have helped a lot of people get off dangerous mind altering medication too. But his depression was apparently so bad that they elected to have this "state of the art" (more like barbaric) procedure done. This therapy consisted of multiple sessions of sending God knows how many volts through this guy's poor brain. They did this for quite a long time. Only one little side effect...He lost a good part of his memory. (Disclaimer: I am not making this up, I'm not that sadistic) In fact he lost so much of his memory that he had a hard time remembering his wife! He couldn't recall many details of their relationship, their courtship, and other portions of their life together. I didn't know what to say, the worst part of it all....Is he still suffers with depression! And his wife told me that this process, as you can imagine, was extremely hard on her and played with her mental well being. This is CRAZY!!! These are real doctors? They are quacks! Wait I forgot us chiropractors are suppose to be the quacks right? I am still picking my jaw up off the floor from this lady's story. Absolute madness.
