ORLANDO HERE WE COME!

This last weekend was memorial day weekend and my family and I took a last mintue trip out of town to Orlando. It was my daughter's first time to Disneyworld and she had a blast but I noticed something as soon as we started our trip that had me paying close attention all weekend long. It started right away at the airport when we were waiting to board the flight, we were flying Southwest which is one of the few airlines that still gives priority boarding for families with young kids, which I greatly appreciate. But families aren't the first people seated, actually not even close. The very first people who are seated are people with disabilities that need assistance, and rightfully so. But on this flight I noticed that the lady who was boarding first wasnt handicapped or disabled, she was morbidly obese. At first that got me thinking, her lifestyle choices literally put her in that wheelchair, that's horrible. But then I started thinking more, it was an airport wheelchair, does she even use a wheelchair at home or in her normal routine? When she got to the plane she was able to walk fine to her seat, she just obviously is so heavy that the burden of walking the airport is too much for her. But the question i want to ask you is....Is this fair? That someone who didnt take care of their health gets priority boarding? Something to think about..

But this didn't stop at the airport, once at Disneyworld, the epidemic of obese people in wheelchairs got even worse. They were everywhere! And they got to the front of the hour long lines at every ride! I literally saw a few people over the weekend that had real disabilities, and probably a hundred that were just obese! And some weren't even morbidly obese but just overweight. But to accomodate all of their rented scooters, they get to go right to the front of the line. The back of these scooters literally said $25 all day rental, or orlando scooter rentals. So think about this, if you take care of yourself and eat right and workout, you have to wait in line, but eat whatever you want and let your health go to crap and get to ride as many rides as you want at Disney. Is this fair? I saw on numerous occasions people in scooters eating ice cream or junk food, im not surprised but thats what got them in the chair! This really made me mad, while my family was searching for something remotely healthy to eat at Disney we also had to wait in extremely long lines. But sit in your rented scooter eat your ice cream and enjoy the ride! What is the world coming to? We are so politically correct" and dont want to offend anyone that we are being unfair to the other people! And guess what, Im offended! Im offended that over 70% of the population is overweight, that 1/3 of the population will die of heart disease, that 1/4 of the population will die of cancer, Im offended because this not only gets priority boarding on planes and rides at Disney but also drives up healthcare costs, which drives up our taxes. Im offended that we choose to eat garbage, so now everywhere you look all you see is garbage and it is getting harder and harder to find real food. Im offended that people will lose family members and we will lose good pillars of society due to lifestyle choices. Im tired of this. We need to change. It is becoming embarrassing. At Disneyworld I can spot a foreigner from an American in a second. Whats the number give away? The American is overweight. We are killing ourselves but dont try to stop anyone from doing it because you might offend them on the way to their grave.

GRILLING SEASON

Picture
Memorial day weekend is over and summer is officially here, which means it's "grilling season". I'm persoanlly a huge fan of grilling, I love to be outdoors grilling some grass fed beef or organic BBQ chicken with my family. But have you ever heard that grilling your meats can cause cancer? Maybe you have, maybe you haven't but it is pretty common knowledge that grilling meats realeases carcinogens. And carcinogens are what causes cancer. But before you go run and throw your grill away, let me give you some safe tips for grilling carcinogen free. On a side note, you should be throwing your microwave away but that's a whole different topic!

Heterocyclic amines, or HCA's, are carcinogenic compounds created when meat is grilled. HCA's have been shown to increase the risk of breast, stomach, lung, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. But the solution to reducing these cancer causing compounds is all in the marinade. The American Institute for Cancer Research found that marinating meat can lower HCAs by as much as 99 percent. A Kansas State University study found that marinating steaks lowered HCAs by 87 percent. Specifically Rosemary marinades are particularly protective. Food Safety Consortium tests found gingerroot, rosemary, and tumeric, all high in antioxidants, curb HCAs in cooked meat, even when cooking is at high temperatures. (Rosemary is most protective and has many other health benefits too!) Using avocado oil can help, as well. It is rich in cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fatty acids, and has a high smoke point which reduces harmful oil oxidation. This is why you do not want to cook to high temperatures with olive oil, which at normal temperature is healthy.

So before you scrap the charcoal, just switch up the marinade!

SATURATED FAT RAISES CHOLESTEROL

During one of my recent corporate wellness talks, I had someone in the audience disagree with me. He may not have been the first person ever to disagree wit me but he was the first to verbally express it! The workshop was on nutrition and I was explaining the benefits of eating good saturated fats and explaining how the low fat and fat free diets are horrible. He had his mind set that saturated fats were bad, which that is what all of us have been led to believe over the years. That saturated fats raise cholesterol levels which in turn leads to heart disease. He was saying that the human body wasnt designed to consume saturated fats. I very politely told him that 54% of human breast milk is made of saturated fat, and asked if he thought that babies shouldnt consume it?! Oops... Human breast milk is essential to proper development! And saturated fats are essential to your health! Let me go through some of the reasons why the low fat myth is a lie that has been going on far too long.

The myth that saturated fat raises cholesterol and causes heart disease is still alive today.

This ideas was based on some flawed observational studies conducted in the 60s and 70s.

Since then, many studies have re-examined this relationship and discovered that:
  1. There is literally no association between saturated fat consumption and cardiovascular disease.
  2. Saturated fat raises HDL (the good) cholesterol and changes the LDL from small, dense (bad) to Large LDL, which is benign.
There is no reason to avoid natural foods that are rich in saturated fats. Meat, coconut oil and butter are perfectly healthy foods.

Bottom Line: Despite decades of anti-fat propaganda, saturated fat has never been proven to cause heart disease. New studies prove that there is literally no association.

HEALTH QUOTE OF THE DAY

“When health is absent Wisdom cannot reveal itself, Art cannot become manifest, Strength cannot be exerted, Wealth is useless and Reason is powerless.” -Herophilies, 300 B.C.

Think about this one. Really think about this. If your are not healthy it is impossible to live out your 100% potential. You can not be used to fully serve your purpose. If you are sick, how easy is it to meditate or pray? If you have a headache, how are you going to paint that masterpiece? If you are rich, what does it matter if you can't enjoy your money because of health reasons? I have heard it hundreds of times and I know I will again. "I can't afford it" or "I only do what my insurance will pay for" YOU can't afford not to! The number one cause of bankruptcy in this country is medical bills. Invest now in your health, key word is invest. It's not an expense, it is an investment. An investment that will return far more than any stock or bond could return. There is nothing else more valuable! and if you rely on an insurance company, a for proft corporation, to determine when and what you invest in, you are going to be very disappointed in the outcome. I have never seen an insurance company be proactive, paying for gym memberships and organic groceries, or even covering a complete chiropractic wellness program. Pills are just much cheaper and easier. So take responsibility for your own health, because in the end you and your family are the only ones who really care. If youre gone, the insurance companywill not miss a step. Trust me. I spend more on food, supplements, and health products than i would say 99% of the population but I never look at it as an expense. It is an investment! You only have one life, here at least, and Im going to spend mine healthy and enjoying the things i like to do. I posted an article last week on the NFL linebacker who spends $600k per year on his health and body, with a large portion of that on chiropractic care! Talk about investing in himself! But he knows his career depends on it. But guess what so does yours! And even more importantly so does your life!
